Bhutanese festival in Kalimpong. Kalimpong is the closest city to Bhutan. We actually crossed the border a few times trekking in small villages on the border. Have I been to Bhutan? Sorta. The Buddhist monastery Zang Dhok Palri Phodang holds a number of rare Tibetan Buddhist scriptures, we wanted to see. At this monastery, on this specific day, it was the Bhutanese Dalai Lama's birthday. Very lucky to say the least because we showed up early and met him! He spoke perfect English, seemed a bit bored or a subdued nervous with the whole goings on. He drove up in a brand new Range Rover, got out, a round shorter man with a baseball cap on. Swear it is true. He said he had to dress and asked us to wait for him and have tea. We waited and then talked for a half an hour, he said that maybe 200-500 people would come today and we should stay as his guest. We did. On this day, around the sun a halo effect was created and the people took that as significant. I think it helped fill his coffers.
